Adoption process and requirements

At Amos, we believe in finding the perfect match between animals and their forever homes. Our adoption process ensures that each animal is placed in a loving and suitable environment.

For every adoption an adoption fee is required and it serves several important purposes for Amos:

Covering Expenses: The adoption fee helps cover the costs associated with the animal’s transport from the care of the rescue organisation to the adopters door. Expenses such as food, veterinary care, vaccinations, spaying/neutering, microchipping, and any other necessary medical treatments for animals in North Macedonia are covered by Amos from charitable donations.

Ensuring Commitment: The adoption fee helps ensure that potential adopters are serious and committed to providing proper care for the animal. It serves as a financial investment and demonstrates the adopter’s willingness to take on the responsibilities of pet ownership. It helps deter impulsive or ill-prepared adopters who may not be fully ready or dedicated to providing lifelong care for the animal.

Value and Perceived Worth: By attaching a fee to the adoption process, the animal’s value and worth are emphasised. This can help prevent the animal from being seen as a disposable or “free” commodity. Adopters are more likely to value and appreciate the animal if they have made a financial commitment.

Resource Allocation: In rare cases an adoption fee helps by allocating limited resources to the animals that genuinely need them. By charging an adoption fee, the organisation ensures that its resources are used to care for and support animals that are truly in need of assistance.

The standard adoption fee at Amos for UK adopters is as follows:

Dogs - £550
Cats - £450

The standard adoption fee at Amos for EU adopters is as follows:

Dogs - €500
Cats - €500

The adoption fee may differ based on the animal’s location and whether the animal requires a specialized home

All interested applicants are required to fill out our Adoption Application Form. This form provides us with important information about you, your lifestyle, and your preferences for the type of animal you wish to adopt. The form helps us understand your suitability as a potential adopter. Once we receive your completed application, our dedicated board members carefully review it. We assess various factors to determine the best match for the animal and ensure that the adoption is in the best interest of both the animal and the adopter.

If your application is approved, the next step is a virtual interview. You will have the opportunity to connect with at least two of our charity representatives. They will ask a series of questions to gain a deeper understanding of your experience, current lifestyle, and your approach to hypothetical situations that could arise with your potential animal companion. The representatives will fill out a form based on the interview, which will be submitted to the board for review.

Depending on your location, a physical home check may be conducted by one of our dedicated volunteers. However, in cases where no volunteer is available in your area, we will conduct a virtual home check to ensure that your living environment is suitable for the animal.

The video below will explain how to set up Zoom and join your scheduled interview.

After reviewing the interview and home check reports, the board will make a final decision regarding your adoption. You will be promptly notified of the decision, which can be one of three possibilities:

If your adoption is approved for the specific animal you applied for, congratulations! We believe you are a suitable match, and we will proceed to the next steps.

In some cases, our experienced team may feel that another animal in our care is more suitable for you based on your application. If this is the case, we will inform you of the alternative animal that we believe would be a better match.

If we do not currently have a suitable animal available for adoption or if we believe that the match is not ideal, we may not be able to approve your application at this time. Please understand that this decision is made with the best interests of both the animals and the applicants in mind.

We appreciate your understanding and cooperation throughout the adoption process. Our goal is to ensure that both you and the animal find a loving and forever home together.
If you have any further questions or need assistance, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

When considering potential adopters, Amos has a set of requirements to ensure the well-being of the animals and to promote responsible pet ownership

These requirements may include:

The adopter must be at least 18 years old or of legal age to enter into a binding contract.

The adopter should have a stable living situation and be able to provide a safe and suitable environment for the animal. This typically includes having suitable space, whether it’s a house or an apartment, with necessary accommodations for the specific animal being adopted.

All members of the household must be aware of and agree to the decision to adopt an animal. It’s crucial to ensure that everyone living in the household is on board and willing to take responsibility for the animal’s care. For rented properties, a Tenancy Agreement that allows pets is mandatory and must be sent as proof to amospetuk@gmail.com

The adopter should be financially capable of providing for the animal’s needs, including food, veterinary care, grooming, and other expenses. Owning a pet comes with financial responsibilities, and it’s important that the adopter is prepared for these costs.

Potential adopters should be able to dedicate time and effort to the care and well-being of the animal. Animals require attention, exercise, training, and social interaction. The adopter should be committed to meeting these needs throughout the animal’s life.

The adopter should have a good understanding of the specific needs and characteristics of the animal they are interested in adopting. This includes knowledge of the animal’s breed, behaviour, exercise requirements, and any specific medical or grooming needs.

While not always a requirement, having previous experience in owning and caring for animals can be beneficial. This experience helps demonstrate the adopter’s familiarity with the responsibilities and challenges that come with pet ownership.

Potential adopters should be willing to comply with the adoption procedures outlined by Amos, which include filling out an application, attending interviews, undergoing home checks, signing contracts and providing an adoption fee. These procedures are in place to ensure the best match between the adopter and the animal.

It’s important to note that these requirements may vary based on the specific animal and its needs. Amos aims to find loving and responsible homes for their animals and will assess each potential adopter on an individual basis.

The Final Steps!

Once the applicant has been approved for adoption, they are required to pay a £50 deposit which is deducted from the total adoption fee. Upon receipt of the deposit, a digital contract will be sent to the applicant.
The applicant is required to sign the digital contract, which confirms their agreement to adopt the animal and outlines the terms and conditions of the adoption. The contract is signed digitally, online.

One week before the animal is scheduled to travel to their new home, the adopter must submit the remaining adoption fee.
At the same time as the remaining fee is due, a PDF version of the contract is sent to the adopter’s email address. The adopter must sign, and return the contract to Amos via email as a scanned or photographed copy. The PDF contract can also be signed digitally, but only with a valid application—avoid using programs like Microsoft Paint.

It is crucial that all information on the contract is true and complete. The contract will be filled based on the details provided in the initial digital contract, so it is essential for the adopter to provide their full name and address accurately.
By following this process, the adopter confirms their commitment to the adoption and acknowledges their understanding of the terms and conditions outlined in the contract.

Please note that the actual contract content and any additional details may vary based on the specific requirements of the animal in question.
