Anja

Anja

Anja is a young shepherd mix puppy with soft eyes, long legs, and a future that is still waiting to be written. She was found on the streets together with her sister, Vanja, after both had clearly been struggling to survive alone. Sadly, Vanja had suffered a horrific injury that ultimately required her leg to be amputated. Once Vanja was rescued and taken for urgent veterinary care, there was no way Anja could simply be left behind to fend for herself, so she too was brought to safety and placed into boarding kennels.

Description

Despite her difficult start, Anja has remained a bright, curious, and affectionate young dog. She is still very much a puppy, playful, observant, eager to interact, and slowly learning how to navigate the world around her. Like many young rescue dogs, she is still developing emotionally and behaviourally, which means her personality will continue to evolve as she matures and settles into a home environment.

Anja appears to have some livestock guardian breed ancestry, which is extremely common among street dogs from the Balkans. Dogs with livestock guardian genetics are often intelligent, observant, independent thinkers who were originally bred to protect territory, animals, and people. As adults, these types of dogs can sometimes become naturally more alert, territorial, vocal, protective, or cautious around strangers and unfamiliar situations.

At the moment, Anja does not display concerning guarding behaviours and is still a friendly, adaptable young dog. However, it is important for potential adopters to understand that certain traits connected to livestock guardian breeds may emerge more clearly as she matures, particularly once she feels attached to a home or territory of her own.

Because of this, Anja will need a committed and responsible home willing to guide her properly through adolescence and adulthood. Early training, structure, boundaries, and ongoing socialisation will be extremely important for her development. We strongly recommend that her future family attend positive reinforcement training classes and remain open to working with a qualified behaviourist if needed to help her grow into a stable, confident, and well-balanced adult dog.

This is not because Anja is a “bad” dog. Quite the opposite. Dogs with guardian breed traits can become some of the most loyal, devoted, intelligent, and deeply connected companions imaginable when they are raised with understanding, consistency, and proper guidance. They simply require owners who are prepared to invest time into helping them navigate the world appropriately.

Anja is still just a young girl with so much potential ahead of her. Beneath everything, she is affectionate, loving, and eager to bond with people. She deserves a home that sees not only the puppy she is now but also the incredible dog she can become with the right support.
